The restaurant looked like a church, with a heavy door, an arched ceiling and white Leccese stone. I thought maybe we had entered a church. Then a ma?tre d' appeared. He sat us at the last available table, in a corner near a fire-place. I scanned the menu. The ambience was a little strange. Would the food be good? God, we used to be so great at making the best of any situation, I thought. I wanted this to be the perfect vacation, full of romantic memories. So far it hadn't been that at all.
