The big hall looked rather empty with about 40 passengers waiting for the flight that was due to take off at 0:00 o’clock, exactly at midnight. I was among them, reading the novel “Gone with the wind” on a long bench in the back row, alone in Qingdao airport.
An hour later, I found myself alone, too on Seat C, Row 15, reading the magazines from a blue bag at the back of the front seat. Of covers or inside were beautiful pictures of beauties of Chinese or foreigners alike, either in fashionable clothes or traditional, some even in hot bikini of various colours, of beautiful scenery in different counties or locations; some prose or articles of reflection or retrospect revealed a sort of mood or taste of petty bourgeoisie, meek, lovely, comfortable, full of self-love or self-pity.
I was fond of the moment reading this kind of magazines alone when once for a while, a pretty air stewardess passed by, asking in a soft, sweet voice, offering various kinds of drinks, which exactly matched my mood and taste there and then. I read and imagined those unforgettable moments vividly described by the writers while enjoying the moment on board the plane, sipping orange juice as if tasting a sweet moment in life, a tasty moment for myself.
“You’d better imagine and feel the moment a poet depicts instead of trying to penetrate the poem or poet for an answer, and put yourself into the scene or emotion as the poet momentarily did.” A guide article recommended. Moment, moment! I couldn’t help thinking of my moment before boarding the plane in Beijing, and many moments of this kind. “I’d be late for my flight if you fail to serve me dumplings right now!” I recalled that I had once joked to a waitress years ago. That time I was not to take a flight, but drove car back home, and the flushing waitress, not air stewardess, apologized with one hand rubbing another for the delay.
Oh, delayed flight, and delayed arrival at Shijiazhuang airport. It was 1:10 a.m. when the plane landed safely. So cool and fresh of summer breeze that brought the sweet scent of grass and earth, as well as the familiar smell of hometown! Well, to my great surprise, not only the driver, but also two friends working in the airport were waiting for me at the exit, inviting me to drink or eat something.
It was an unforgettable trip with the unforgettable moments, the moment of rushing to Beijing airport, of waiting alone in Qingdao airport at midnight, of reading magazines on board the plane, and the moment of unexpectedly meeting friends once I walked across the quiet, empty waiting- hall.
