Yes, car is the symbol of status. It's know that only the rich can afford a car. And the riches are always the people who have political power or financial capacity. So car becomes to the symbol of people's status.
Nowadays, more and more people buy cars. But we also know that buying a car is much easier than maintaining a car. Maintaining a car need more money. So people always choose the car which suit to their status in case of unaffordable.
