The Grammy Awards
In 1957 the Hollywood Beautification Committee decided that there ought to be an Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and so after a meeting of the executives of the big recording companies (Decca,MGM,RCA Victor,Columbia and Capitol) they created an association,with the aim of rewarding artistic creativity,fostering better relationships among members of the industry and obtaining world recognition. After the Hollywood branch , other Chapters of the association opened around the USA,so that by 2002 there were 12, although in 1993 the national United Recording Academmy foundation, with the aim of fostering musical education and awareness.It runs courses, concerts,offers study grants and interats with the general public throughout the year. In 2005, there are 16,000 members of the Academy,from all areas of the USA music industry
The most obvious face of the Academy’s work is the Annual Grammy Awards,where music artists are given an award in 105 different categories for their artistic or techoical achievement,not based on sales or chart positions. The first Grammy Awards ceremony took place in 1958,when the Record of the Year was Italian Domenico Modugno’s worldwide hot Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu. The 47th Grammy Awards took place in February 2005,and the three-and –a-half-hours’ programme was watched by 650 million people around the world.The Record of the Year was Ray Charles and Norah Jones’s Here We Go Again.

其中，最具有代表性的便是每年一度的格莱美奖颁奖仪式，他们会从105个项目中以艺术和科技成果选出最好的音乐艺术家，并给予授奖，而不再简单的根据歌曲的销售情况。在1958年第一届格莱美奖颁奖仪式上，年度最佳金曲奖授予了来自意大利歌手明尼科莫杜尼奥的红遍全球的歌曲《Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu》。2005年的第47届颁奖现场，总长达3个半小时的颁奖过程为全世界6.5亿观众同步直播。年度金曲是《Here we go again》来自理查尔斯和诺拉.琼斯。
