It was about as tough a set of circumstances for tennis as anyone could ask for. Not only was it the first time I was playing a tournament since Rome, but I was deep in mourning. In a few days I’d have to give a eulogy at my dad’s funeral. From the sidelines I thought of how I’d tell them about this man who was my superhero. He gave me the tools I needed to triumph in the world, the patience, discipline, love of hard work, belief in family, positive attitude. He was gone, but not forever because I lived by his example, and when I had kids they’d know his example too and pass it on to their kids, and so on down the line.
