Two months away from tennis. It seemed like a lifetime. And yet part of me yearned for it. At least I’d get to spend time with Dad. He wasn’t doing well. The summer before he’d had what was supposedly routine surgery. What the doctors discovered was an aggressive form of stomach cancer. Dad was full of hope. “We’ll beat this,” he said. Soon he was back to work and working out. He pushed himself as much as he pushed me. As he used to tell me, “You can’t control your level of talent, but you can control your level of effort.”
