In delivering the undertakings given when joining the WTO, China removed all of its stringent restrictions over her retail sales market in 2004. Local and foreign investors immediately had their sight focused firmly on the lucrative chain-store supermarket business in China. Taking lessons from experiences and management concepts from famous international chain-store corporations, local operators are gaining grounds continuously in enhancing their competitiveness and efficiency. On the other hand, however, overseas players in general are not only more well-known, better managed and higher in operational sophistication than their local counterparts, they are also more appealing to local consumers, more capable in building customer loyalty and therefore pose a great threat to local corporations fighting for market share. For this reason, Chinese chain-store operators are facing challenges they have never encountered in the past while at the same time, an unprecedented market development opportunity awaits them. To objectively analyse the its competitive edges with those of its competitors, to improve its own core competitiveness to the highest degree and to capture the local market so as to maximise profits and global-popularity are now top priorities to every Chinese supermarket operator.
