had he grown up under more favorable circumstances 是一个倒装的假设句，正常语序应为了if he had grown up under more favorable circumstances.如果在这前面有一个逗号的话似乎会好理解一些。整个句子应是虚拟语气。前面的It是形式主语，真正的主语应是：how able an underprivileged youngster might have been
