The Cornell method
I read the chapter 2 “Summary Writing for Business” on October 8, 2008.
According to the chapter, summary writing is a key business communication skill. Summary includes descriptive summary and evaluative summary, which provides the essential elements in a logical and easy-to-understand form that helps people quickly grasp the issues. The first step to summarizing is to note the main idea by reading the material very carefully, and then write a concise, simple sentence for each main idea, finally combine them into an essay.
Cornell note taking method is used to prepare the summary of this chapter. This method requires capturing the essence of the information, finding main ideas, sub-ideas, supporting ideas and avoiding unnecessary wordiness.
Outlining
I read the article “Leadership development = Character development” on October 8, 2008.
In this article, the author explained why leadership development is about character development through the five fundamentals of leadership.
By using outlining method, I provide the structure for the information obtained from the article and organized into meaningful units through headings and subheadings.
Mind Mapping
As a law clerk student, it is very important to know what law clerk career is.
Besides knowing Knowledge of laws, court procedures and government regulations, a law clerk should have a set of skills and abilities, such as communications, computer, solving complex problem, and so forth. In addition, different law clerks have different tasks. Real estate law clerk would search land title, draft and examine contracts for purchase and sale; litigation law clerk would take notes of evidence and prepare legal documents relevant to court actions; family law clerk would prepare net family income and fill out legal forms.
I use mind mapping method to represent the idea of law clerk career. Through connecting the main ideas branch, sub-ideas branch and related detail ideas branch by lines, I make a clear sketch to help people make sense of law clerk career easily.
Comparison
Cornell note taking, outlining and mind mapping are all wonderful methods for preparing a summary. Cornell note taking method focuses on capturing the essence of the information; outlining put emphasis on providing structure for the information; mind mapping help people expand on an idea by drawing a sketch.
