In 1993, Dubai had 8214 hotel rooms in 157 hotels, twenty-six of which are regarded as suitable for Western tourists. Sheraton, Hilton and the Inter-Continental feature amongst the international chains with properties in the city, while Holiday Inn, Trust House Forte and Marriott had properties under construction.
One of Dubai's most successful established hotels, the Metropolitan, is located near the new Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza. The metropolitan is owned and operated by the AL Habtoor group, which has diversified holdings including engineering, construction, car sales, catering, real estate and education, in addition to its hotel interests.
The Metropolitan opened in 1797 with 200 rooms. In anticipation of the increased competition likely to result from the opening of several major new hotels in Dubai, the Metropolitan has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme and has adopted a number of service enhancements. One floor is now dedicates to 'butler service', the first available in the Gulf area. The butler will unpack suitcases, deliver morning coffee, and arrange concert tickets. The hotel management explained the other advantages of the concept for business visitors.
Guests will only deal with one person during their entire stay at the hotel. Requests will be carried out by the person asked to. Professionally trained butlers are being recruited internationally. Repeat visitors will be assigned butler, who will get to know guests individually.
A notable feature of the hotel is the twelve high standard catering outlets, including those specialising in Indian, Chinese and Italian cuisine. It also offers a coffee shop and a choice of bars and a night club. The Metropolitan is situated on the main road leading to Abu Dhabi, close to the Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone and its catering and entertainment facilities are popular with the professional and managerial expatriot residents of the surrounding area.
The Metropolitan attracts both long and short stay corporate clients, while its sister property, located on a private beach, is popular with tour operators from Western Europe. Guests of either hotel are able to enjoy the amenities of the other, with a courtesy coach shuttling between them and to the city centre. Both properties provide facilities for guests at Dubai's three grass golf courses, and they are linked to an international golf organisation providing accommodation packages which include a complimentary round of golf with each night's accommodation.
The Metropolitan Beach Resort has ninety rooms, and sixteen junior suites. Its guests have a choice of five restaurants, and a range of leisure amenities. These include tennis and squash courts, a gym and sauna. In addition to its large, clean private beach the resort has a children's pool, and a swim-in bar in the Olympic size pool which is cooled during the summer months.
This hotel too has been upgraded ahead of the planned reconstruction of one its main competitors, the Chicago Beach hotel and the opening of the Trust House Forte Jumeria beach hotel. As well as a small luxury hotel, the Metropolitan Beach is an exclusive private club, but during remodelling, the Metropolitan's security gate was relocated inside the compound to encourage passing traffic to use the resort's restaurant facilities. However, only club members, and guests registered at either of the two Metropolitan hotels, can gain access to its leisure amenities and the beach, thus ensuring an exclusive and relaxed atmosphere. The uncrowded beach will be a major asset to the Metropolitan's hotel business, hecause under a recent change in ledislation all future properties must provide free public access to their beach.
