“My child studies at junior high school and goes straight for the Internet everyday after school. He ignored everything besides eating, just chatting and playing games at the same time! Of course he doesn’t have time to do the homework, so that he needs to get up earlier to finish it. Normally the kid is mute, indifferent, absent-minded, but energetic when touching the Internet.” said a helpless father. Many parents complained that the Internet made a bad impact on kids’ learning, even the communication with other family members.
Internet addiction was taken as one of the ten internet evils (Guan, 2002). (The ten internet evils are: internet extramarital relations, garbage e-mails, internet gossip, internet addiction, internet sex, internet complication, internet gambling, internet shopping, internet estrangement and internet pseudo-democracy.) Chou (1998) defined internet addiction as ‘a chronic or cyclic indulgence due to using the Internet too frequently. One cannot resist the desire to use again, and wants to extend the using time, which leads to tolerance, abstinence and withdrawal. One has strong psychological dependence for the Internet’. Internet addiction is a morbid state like alcoholic, gambling, drug addiction (American Psychological Association, 2000; Kandell, 1998).
Young (1996) brought up an identifiable standard, which is suitable for common people done by themselves and is the simplest method for detecting internet addiction. If someone marks more than five items ‘Yes’ then he/she has internet addition.
