南朝
重元寺又名重玄寺、承天寺，原址在唯亭山麓，阳澄湖畔。相传始建于南朝梁武帝天监二年（公元504年），迄今已有一千五百多年的历史，是苏州历史上著名的寺院。
重元寺原为陆僧瓒故宅。梁武帝倡佛，士大夫舍宅为寺蔚然成风。陆僧瓒“因睹祥云重重所覆，请舍宅，为重云寺。中误书为重玄，遂名之”。 重玄寺一度易名承天寺、能仁寺，后又恢复重玄寺，清时因避康熙帝玄烨之讳，易“玄”为“元”，重元寺名就一直延用至今。
