《印度之行》读后感

《印度之行》通过描写一趟异国之旅，向我们展示了东方文化的神秘和人生的不可思议。情节围绕一个年轻的印度人阿齐兹医生展开，他无辜地被一个神经质的英国女人指控为企图对其进行人身伤害。通过这个故事，小说以其出色的手法描绘了一组印度人、英国军官和英国妇女的群像。

Post-reading of A Passage to India
A passage to India, by depicting a trip to foreign countries, revealed to us the mysterious oriental culture and inconceivability of life. The plot develops around Doctor Aziz, a young Indian and he is unreasonably accused by a neurotic English woman of intending to offend her. Through the story, the novel unfolded the pictures of the Indians, English officials and English women by its outstanding technique.
The novel explored and tried the combination of the oriental and western culture. By means of the seeking for ‘home’, it hoped that the relation of the combination would be found out. Though the combination originally should be smooth, it seemed that there were difficulties, even failure. The Indians were humble, however, English proud and imperious. The unequal status between India and England constituted the confusion and doubt on the actuality among people. However, women were different. They hope to communicate with Indians and know more about India. Though Doctor Aziz, a well-educated Indian man, was familiar with the English civilization, he will never get his position in it. The failure of making friends had proved that the difficulty in cultural combination in the certain era of the history.
Forster, the author, concentrated on the English with his deep conscience and consciousness. He hoped that, by ‘criticism’ from non-speaking countries and the ‘combination’ of different cultures, he could heal the soul of English from the ultimate indifference. The novel expressed the craving for love in different nations so that the difficulties in realizing the love were revealed and let us realize that creating opportunities and eliminating barriers should be the same aim of all nations.
In addition, the novel is a reflection of the author’s mastery in literature due to its clearness in depicting characters, expression of the subtle changes of thoughts and life and strength in mastering the language. Meanwhile, I am impressed by the description of exotic sentiment which lingers for a long time.
