does not believe in romance and love as Henry does. Instead, he proclaims himself in love with nearly every woman he meets, then quickly discards the idea as he finds the next one. He appears to have something of a crush on Henry, or at least engages in what literary criticism refers to as a "homosocial relationship," a bond between men that borders on homoeroticism.
Helen Ferguson: A Scottish nurse, Helen is Catherine's best female friend in the war. She is also friends with Henry at first, but later grows jealous of his and Catherine's relationship and fears Catherine will abandon her
C. The meaning of its conclusion.
This is a tragedy, and tragedy usually happened in rains .Rain serves in this novel as a potent symbol of the inevitable disintegration of happiness in life. Catherine infuses the weather with meaning as she and Henry lie in bed listening to the storm outside. As the rain falls on the roof, Catherine admits that the rain scares her and says that it has a tendency to ruin things for lovers. Of course, no meteorological phenomenon has such power; however, Catherine’s fear becomes prediction, for doom does eventually come to them. After Catherine’s death, Henry leaves the hospital and walks back to hotel in the rain. Here, the falling rain validates Catherine's anxiety and confirms one of the novel's main contentions: great love, like anything else in the world --good or bad, innocent or deserving --cannot last long.
The rain is a metaphor for death in the story. When Catherine tells Henry that she has always been afraid of the rain because she can imagine herself or him lying dead in it, he replies that he has always liked the rain, and through this dialogue we understand that though he has suffered a combat injury and seen men die, he has not been touched by fears of mortality. On the other hand, Catherine has deeply affected by death. For her, death is a more horrible thing and the rain serves to remind her of her death and the death of whom she loves. Thus the rain falls when death is approaching, such as before polices come to arrest Henry in hotel and they boat to Switzland all night in rain. Most significantly, when Henry leaves the hospital after Catherine's death, we are told that he walks back to the hotel in the dark, in the rain. He is familiar with the feelings of death and rain.
III. Conclusion
We can see from A Farewell to Arms , the pessimism penetrates this novel. Every character in this novel leads a heartbroken life, and everyone needs anesthetic for their life, no matter soldiers or officers or priests, they all need something to rely on during the catastrophe of the war
In order to make clear why the theme in a farewell to Arms is mainly depressing and thereby get a full understanding of the novel, I have analyzed the theme from its background, plot and some characters, As a book filled with Hemingway's feelings, thoughts and personal experiences, A farewell to Arms reflects exactly his war experiences and mental conditions in the 1920s, It is the author's thoughts of disillusionment and loss that decides the theme in the novel a mainly pessimistic one. The tragic love story in the novel extends the author's strong hatred of war and reveals that the war is the real root of the couple in the novel and the “lost generation” in the real society.
Every great work—A Farewell to Arms can surely be regarded as one—“contains more than one kind of thoughts” as Hemingway has said, and has rich inner meaning which are open to interpretation. This paper has just attempted one interpretation of the novel in terms of its theme. However, I hope that it will be of some help for the full understanding of the work.
