I'm Ping Li. I'm a school teacher. I teach math and Chinese to second graders. I've been teaching for more than 10 years. I love the job and I love the kids. The upside of the job is to see how the wonderful minds of children learn and blossom. It's a real pleasure. But the down side of it is the pressure from parents, the school and from other teachers. One of the main problems as I see it is of the Chinese educational system is the emphasis on grades, which mean everything. This is because we don't have other ways to measure children's success at learning or the teacher's success at teaching. As a result we have all become slaves to grades. We are unwittingly training generations and generations of exam performers but not thinkers or creators. At the end of the day, children suffer the most because their creativity and talents will slowly but surely be eroded by rote learning and pressure to achieve high test scores. My wish is to see a learning environment that encourages creatvity, individualism, innovation, self confidence and self-worth.

2. I'm Ping Li and let me tell you about our school. Maybe you think this is normal but the strangest thing for me is the rule that parents cannot come into the school. it's really weird in that this seems quite parallel to that of a prison, with the only difference being that the incarcerated serve their time from 8 to 5. The parents must have total faith in the school and the teachers that their children are not mistreated in any way since there is really no way for them to know. I can tell you the parents that your kids are in most cases quite safe and are happy and are learning but unfortuately once in a while stories come to light where teachers actually abuse students, from corporal punishments to assaults. So my wish is for some kind of openness and accountability, other than a good report card, to the parents.
