A variety of nutrients is gradually decomposed into simple and absorbable low-molecular-weight metabolites and they are assimilated by the small intestine. Consequently, after the food transits the small intestine, the digestion process has been basically finished. Only the stodgy food debris are left over and enter the large intestine from the small intestine. The large intestine doesn't have digestive functions. It has only absorptive functions.
