Abstract: After China's entry into WTO, book retailers encounters increasing challenges from foreign bookstore chains. As the topmost Chinese book seller and distributor, Xinhua Bookstore faces an array of problems ranging from inaccurate marketing targets, imperfect distribution of chain stores and a relative small scale to questionable competitiveness, dissatisfactory economic effectiveness, capital shortage and substandard management. The present paper points out the urgency and necessity of chain operation for Xinhua Bookstore. Also discussed are several issues related to the transformation of Xinhua Bookstore to a chain operation model. The paper ends with a proposal for the Xinhua Bookstore's future development.
