learn是一个动词，动词后面应该跟宾语，宾语可以是名词或者是相当于名词的名词性从句，而what =sth that 因此what they need =sth that they need to know，sth that they need to know 是一个以sth为先行词的定语从句，sth是know 的宾语，这样一来便语法上通了
如果选they are needed 就成了被动语态了，意思显然不对，不能说 他们被需要```如果想表达他们需要sth，也应该是they need sth 不能是they are needed sth，况且need是及物动词，后面得跟sth
