what从句用otherwis引出与过去事实相反的虚拟语气，表示“教授提醒了我，我才没有忘记那件事。”

此题的关键是要掌握虚拟语气在含蓄条件句中的用法，除了otherwise（否则）以外，能够表示虚拟条件的词和短语还包括：but that（要不是）、without（没有）or、（不然）、under．．．circumstances（在……的情况下）、in the past（在过去）等等。
下面引用《薄冰实用英语语法详解》中的几个例子：
1.We didn’t know his telephone number; otherwise we would have telephoned him.
我们不知道他的电话号码，否则我们就会给他打电话。（暗含条件是otherwise）
