When I lived in China, I have studied oil painting for 2 years. I know some characters of oil painting, such as extremely stringent drawings, decorative and full and rich colors, and smooth lines of symmetry of composition. Those characters are all embody in E.J.Hughes painting.
I chose one special painting from his paintings. So let me explain why this picture is a special one. This picture drew the Gabriela Island. In all of his painting which is sitting at the picture show in the downtown building. Most of the paintings have human civilization. For example, some pictures have church or ship; some have high way or factory. This picture just drew nature landscape and gave expression to symmetry. First, we put a line down the middle of the painting. In the left of the painting is an ocean and in the right of the painting is a beach. So this symmetry is ocean to land. Second, we put a line across on the middle of the painting. On the top left corner is the sky which color is blue. On the lower left quarter is the ocean which color is blue. So the two parts is symmetry. On the top right corner are forest and the lower right quarter is grassplot. When we enjoy the picture we can pay attention in the symmetry.
When I was studying painting, my teacher showed us some paintings, like “The Starry Night” and “Café Terrace on the Place Du Forum.” Now I also appreciate some different painting.
