the other通常表示两者之中的“一个……另一个……”。例如：
1)I have a book in one hand and a pencil in the other (hand).
我一手拿着书本，一手握着铅笔。
2)I have two sisters.One is a teacher,the other is a doctor.
我有两个姐姐，一个是教师，另一个是医生。

the other后面还可以接名词复数，表示一定范围内除去一部分以外后其余的全部。例如：
1)Tom is taller than the other boys in his class.
汤姆比他班上其他所有的男孩都高。
（……其余的……）
2)These two apples are rotten,but the other ones are all good.
这两个苹果烂了，可是其它的都是好的。
（一些……其余的……）

而another是指三者或三者以上的“另一个”，也表示除去一部分以后的另一部分但不是余下的全部。例如：
1)Here are three pens.One is red,another is blue,the third is green.
这里有三支钢笔，一支是红色的，另一支是蓝色的，还有一支是绿色的。

2)I don't like this coat.Would you please show me another one?
我不喜欢这件衣服，请再拿一件给我看看好吗？

3)There is room for another few people in the back of the bus．
公共汽车后面还能坐下几个人。
