Should children learn a foreign language in primary school?

Some people believe it is better for children to begin to learn a foreign language at primary school than secondary school. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Being able to speak an excellent language is very beneficial for the development of individuals in modern society, which it is intensely competitive. A foreign language, such as English in China ,has been a compulsory course so that some people think to begin to learn it at primary school is better for children than to do it at secondary school. Here I will discuss the pros and cons of this with an example of English which is playing a key role in educational system in China and it turns out that the benefits may never make up for the drawbacks.
The people who send supports to this issue are confident that it can help children lay a good foundation for mastering a foreign language. In China, as a compulsory course, English is one of the most important courses, which can dominate the progress in study or a person’s career. For instance, without a good English performance at school, a student might not be admitted by an university of high educational quality. Without the qualification of CET-4, a graduate might not get a good job with a good salary. English is so critical that it can dominate individuals’ development in China. In this regard, to let children begin to learn it early is definitely helpful, which can help them learn the basic knowledge about English earlier.

However, although English is of tremendous importance in modern China, other important academic courses have an comparatively important effect on children’s development, such as Math and Chinese. In my opinion, to learn these coures are more indispensable than English for a Chinese child, which is the first step in a Chinese child’s learning career. When they have the basic knowledge of these courses, they are able to have an comprehensive ability to study other subjects including English. In addtion to this, I don’t think that the length of the time is a key factor to learn a foreign language. For example, many Chinese graduates who have studied English for about ten years yet have not spoken English fruquently. Why is this so? They have an incorrect idea about learning English. Learning English is not just for the examination or a certain qualification, but is for communicating with foreigners that is the fundamental goal of it.
All in all, only when the children have an good comprehension about learning a foreign language, they will be able to learn it with a certain aim , master it more deeply and use it more frequently. This need making a efficient plan of study. The more efficiently they learn it , the more masterly they use it. It doesn’t mean that you must spend much time on it or begin to learn it too early. Therefore, it is my belief that to learn a foreign language at primary school is not necessary for children and to do well in the basic courses should be the first step and the key one for the further study.
