This image of a pith helmet was fixed by using a Blur Direction of 40 degrees and a Blur Distance of 10 pixels to produce the image on the right.


Motion Blur Correction Procedure

There are 7 steps to correct an image with motion blur :-


Step 1 - Start with the best image possible

The more pixels you give Focus Magic to work with, and the more accurately the color of each pixel is defined, the better the result. Wipe any dust off the photo before scanning it in. Scan it in with a high resolution (dpi) and edit out any bits of dirt. If you are saving it as a JPG, then save the JPG file with low compression (high accuracy), etc.


Step 2 ?Set the Image Source

The 揑mage Source?optimizes the focusing algorithm for that particular source. The focusing algorithm is more conservative for sources which are less accurate (eg. Conventional Camera), and is more aggressive for sources which are more accurate (eg. Digital Camera). Non-linearities are also taken into account for photographic film and CCD抯. The difference to the output is quite small, but worth it if you know what the image source is.

Step 3 - Determine the Blur Direction

Enter the Blur Direction so that it is the same as the line in the circle. Please see Blur Direction for the details.


Step 4 - Determine the Blur Distance

Enter the Blur Distance either by trial and error or from a calculation. Please see Blur Distance for the details.


Step 5 - Select the Amount

Once you have determined the most suitable 態lur Width? select the most appropriate Focus Amount. This is normally set to 100%, but you can tell Focus Magic to 揢nder Compensate?or 揙ver Compensate?with Amounts which are less that 100% or greater than 100% respectively.


Step 6 ?Select Noise Reduction (Photoshop plug-in only)

Step 7 ?Correct the Whole Image

Once you have done some spot checks on the image you can press the OK button to focus the whole image. There is a huge amount of number crunching to do, which can take from less than a minute to over an hour for a very large image. Focus Magic has been designed to run in the background, so provided you are not running low on memory, you can use your computer for something else while the image is being focused.

If you want to abort the image processing, simply press Esc.
