Every summer, a great many students travel to other countries looking for work and adventure. Most of the chances are in seasonal work, mainly connected with tourism and agriculture The pay is usually poor, but most people work abroad for the excitement of travel. You can pick grapes in France, entertain (逗乐) kids on American summer camps, and, of course, there are always jobs in hotels and restaurants.
　　But it is not easy now to find work, "Unless you speak the language of the country well, there will be very few openings," says Anthea Ellis, an adviser on vacation work for students. "If you work with a family in Italy, you'll have to speak Italian. When you wash dishes in a restaurant in Paris, the owner will expect you to speak French. British students only have a language for jobs in the USA and Australia."
　　Not everyone enjoys the experience. Sarah James was employed to help forty American children in Europe. The two teachers with the children had never been abroad. One child lost his passport; another became seriously ill and was flown home; the whole group was thrown out of one hotel because of the noise they made, and Sarah herself was robbed on her only pleasant evening of the entire trip." I did visit a lot of new places," she says, "but it wasn't worth it. The pay was reasonable and it really was a 24-hour-a-day job. The kids never slept!"
　　"The trouble is, students expect to have an adventurous time of it," Anthea Ellis points out. "After al l they see it as a holiday. In practice, though, you have to work hard. At the same time, all vacation work is casual(临时) work. You'll have a job when the hotel, the restaurant, or the campsite is busy. in other words you'll work if it's convenient for the company that employs you. But you have few employment rights. As soon as the holiday season finishes, they'll get rid of you."

不过现在找到工作是不容易的，“在其它国家机会是很少的，除非你能很好地说所在国的语言，”Anthea Ellis（一个学生假期工作情况顾问）说，“如果你在一个意大利家庭工作，你得会说意大利语。当你在一个巴黎餐馆洗盘子时，老板会希望你说法语。而英国学生的语言只有在美国和澳大利亚才用得上。”

不是每个人都喜欢这样的经历。Sarash James被雇用来照顾到欧洲的四十个美国孩子。和这些孩子一起来的两个老师从未出过国。一个孩子丢失了护照；另一个孩子患了重病只好坐飞机返回；由于太吵闹，这一群孩子被扔在了旅馆外面，而且Sarash自己也在这整个旅程里最愉快的一晚上被抢劫了。“我的确是游览很多新地方，”她说，“但是并不值得。报酬还算合理，而这真是一个24小时的工作。这些小孩总不睡觉。”


“苦恼的是：学生们期望假期是一个冒险的时候，”Anthea Ellis指出。“虽然他们把这看作是假期。而实际上，话虽这样说，你还是得努力地工作。而且所有假期工作都是临时的。当宾馆，饭店，或露营地繁忙的时候，你会有一个工作。换言之，只有在公司方便的时候才会雇用你。而你极少有选择的权利。一旦假期结束了，他们就会解雇你。
