Bill turned the key in the heavy lock and put it calmly in his pocket.He did so from a certain kind of fear.This was the only entrance to the house.Though Tom would be away for at least three days,Bill had a strange feeling of his nearness.In the stillness he seemed to hear Tom's voice.He turned round quickly,but there was only the girl.

The girl carrying an oil lamp led Bill upstairs.She stopped and raised the lamp in each doorway,staring at him meanwhile.Satisfied he was only guest.Bill came to the last door.

"You sleep here,sir,"she said,giving him the lamp."Your friend slept here too."

"Good night,Miss,"he said politely.

Her lips moved in reply,but he didn't catch the words.Her eyes never for a moment left his face.He stepped in,and as he turned to close the door,she was still standing there.In the silence he felt a little terrified now.

He shut the door in the girl's face then,leaving her in the dark.He opened it again almost at once.She had disappeared without a sound.A deep mistrust suddenly came to him.Why had that girl stared at him so?

　　比尔用钥匙将厚重的门锁锁上，把钥匙平静地放入自己的口袋。他这样做是因为感觉到一种恐惧。这扇门是通向这栋房子的唯一入口。尽管汤姆至少会离开三天，比尔却奇怪地感觉到他就在附近。在一片寂静中，他似乎听见了汤姆的声音。他迅速转过身来，但身后只有那个女孩。

　　女孩擎着一盏油灯，将比尔引上楼。她在每扇门前都会停下来举起油灯，盯着他看。比尔发觉自己是唯一的住客，放下心来，来到最后一扇门前。

　　“先生，您在这里睡吧，”她说道，将油灯递给比尔：“您的朋友也曾住过这个房间。”

　　“晚安，小姐。”比尔礼貌地说道。

　　她嘴唇微动，但比尔没听见她回答了什么。她的眼睛一刻不离地盯着他的脸。比尔迈进屋内，转过身来关门时，她还在原地站着。默然间，他现在感到一丝恐惧。

　　他当着女孩的面关上门，将她留在黑暗之中，但几乎立刻又打开了门——她已经不见了，没有留下丝毫动静。深深地疑惧突然向比尔袭来：女孩为什么会那样地盯着他看？
