And the 19% of news staff is focusing their effort on the economic field, ranking first among all the news coverage with 15% in culture and education, 14% in politics and 8% in agriculture, etc. (苑立新，2001:45). What's more, economic reports on China for foreign audience are on sharp increase in the past few decades, led by China Today，，China Daily， China Economic News, and Beijing Review. This obviously has done much good to the economic exchange of China with other countries, and thus promoting the development of national economy at an unprecedented rate.
However, the growing rate of journalism for foreigners cannot keep pace with the explosive economic information resulting from the rapid development around the country. And even the a few journals, most of which are in English-the world-widely used language, can hardly be satisfactory because of varied drawbacks, like mechanical transplanting of the Chinese style into English journalism, the misuse of terminology or culture misunderstanding.
Although it is urgent to make improvement in this area with its dominance in international communication, related research is still on the threshold. After all, English has been the dominating language in language study with its advanced economy and, so most researches done before are concerned about how this foreign language can be translated into our native speak. And the rare researches about Chinese-English translation are centering on the classic literature. If the key word Chinese-English translation is typed into the ten-year documentation database of Chinese journalism, only 394 articles will be found and 148 were published before 2000 (http://202.121.99.158:8080). It's not until recent years that the necessity of C-E translation of news came into the vision of researchers, and C-E translation of economic news is merely referred to in a few theses due to the fedgling development of reports on China for foreigners.
Therefore, the writer of this dissertation is trying to explore into this virgin field of C-E translation of economic news in the hope of giving some reference to other researchers of language or journalism. The attention is narrowed down on the lexical terms due to their importance in translation, as British translation theorist Peter Newmark put it "All the same, we do translate words, because there is nothing else to translate; there are only words on the page; there is nothing else there...the basic thought-carrying element of language is its grammar. But since the grammar is expressed only in words, we have to get the words right" (Peter Newmark, 1988:77). So, to help perfect the C-E translation of economic news-an essential means to promote economic exchanges and development, this dissertation is about to suggest some translation methods and point out translation problems existing in the news writing and reporting about business for foreign audience, based on the lexical analyses of the Chinese economic news.
