The State should try to improve the emergency (突发事件) management of the national college entrance examination to make sure every student has equal access to the exam.
Almost 5,000 students in Jian’ou, a city in eastern China’s Fujian Province, sat the national college entrance exam on Tuesday, one week later than the students in the rest of the country.
After receiving an application from local officials to put off the exam as a result of a flood, the central government made all the necessary arrangements to help the local government prepare the examination, including printing back-up exam papers, making necessary repairs to the exam locations and stepping up safety measures in the area. All of these measures resulted in the attendance of all the local students on Tuesday.
Although these students only make up a tiny part of the 10 million students sitting the exam this year, the central, provincial and local governments all offered enough resources, and made the necessary preparations to ensure the smooth holding of the exam.
Every student qualified to take the exam should get the chance to sit the exam. Only when all students gain equal access to the exam is it possible to talk about complete fairness. Losing the chance to sit the national college entrance exam only adds insult (羞辱) to injury.
