Little Chad was a shy, quiet young boy. One day he came home and told his mother that he’d like to make a valentine for everyone in his class. Her heart sank. She thought, “I wish he wouldn’t do that!” because she had watched the children when they walked home from school. Her Chad was always behind them. They laughed and talked to each other. But Chad was never included. However, she decided she would go along with her son. So she bought paper, glue and crayons. For three weeks, night after night, Chad made thirty-five valentines.
Valentine’s Day came, and Chad was beside himself with excitement. He carefully tied them up, put them in a bag, and ran out of the door. His mother decided to bake him his favorite cookies and serve them nice and warm with a glass of cool milk when he came home from school. She just knew he would be disappointed and that maybe it would ease the pain a little. It hurt her to think that he wouldn’t get many valentines – maybe none at all.
That afternoon she put the cookies and milk on the table. When she heard the children outside, she looked out of the window. Sure enough, there they came, laughing and having the best time. And, as always , there was Chad following them. He walked a little faster than usual. She fully expected him to burst into tears as soon as he got inside. His hands were empty, she noticed, and when the door opened she kept back the tears
“Mommy has some cookies and milk for you,” she said.
But he hardly heard her words. He just marched right on by, his face shining, and all he could say was, “Not a one. Not a one.”
Her heart sank. And then he added, “I didn’t forget a one, not a single one! ”

小Chad是一个腼腆且又安静的小男孩。一天他回到家对妈妈说，他要给班里的每个人准备一份情人节礼物。她的心一下子沉了下去，“我真希望他别去这么做”！ 因为孩子们从学校回家的时候她看见过他的Chad总是在他们后面。他们都彼此说笑着，但Chad确从不和他们一起说笑。尽管如此，她还是决定和儿子一起来做这件事。于是她买了纸，胶水和蜡笔，一晚接一晚的，整整三周，Chad做出了35份情人节礼物。
情人节到了，Chad很是兴奋。他小心翼翼的把礼物包好装进袋子里，跑了出去。他妈妈决定给他烤一些他最喜欢的小点心，在准备一杯冰凉的牛奶，在他放学回来的时候好好的招待他一下。她知道他会失望的，这样做可能会减轻一些他的痛苦。一想到他不会交到许多朋友，也许一个都没有，她就感到痛心。
那天下午，她把小点心和牛奶放在桌上，当她听到孩子们在窗外的时候，她向窗外望去。无疑是他们过来了，笑着，享受着美好的时光。而且和从前一样，Chad就跟在他们后面。他比平常走的稍快了一些，她完全期待着在他进门时，他的泪水能夺眶而出。她注意到，他的两手空空，当门打开时，她忍住了泪水。
“妈妈为你准备了点心和牛奶，”她说。
但是她几乎听不到他说话。他只是大踏步的走了进来，脸上放着光，他所说的只是：“没有一个人，没有一个人”。
她的心一沉，然后他又说到：“我一个人都没忘，一个都没忘 ！”
