CLEVELAND-A security guard will get a $ 75,000 reward for returning $640,000 that fell from an armored truck, even though he held on to the money two days before returning it, authorities said on Tuesday.
FBI officials at first didn’t agree to any reward being paid to Mark Morant, 38, because they felt he held on to the money too long in an apparent indecision over whether he could get away with keeping it.
Morant, the father of three children, said he never planted to keep the money. He said he tried last Thursday to call the Federal Reserve Bank about finding the missing money the day it fell from the truck in downtown Cleveland, but was unable to reach any bank officials with a pay phone call.
The Cleveland man returned the money to the bank last Friday in three unopened bundles. Morant said he was questioned by FBI officials, who were skeptical(不相信的) about his motivations, but they finally decided he had done nothing wrong by the 48-hour delay in returning the money.
Van Harp, agent in charge of the Cleveland FBI office, said they decided he should get the reward because he had the money intact without even breaking into the bundles.
At Systems, the armored truck company which offered the reward, announced that besides the $75,000 it would pay a $10,000 reward to the man who saw Morant gather up the fallen money and who gave his description to police.
