关系代词as的用法是历年统考中的一个重要考点。它主要有如下两种用法：

一、与such, the same, as连用。如：

1. It wasn't such a good dinner________she had promised us.

A) that B) which

C) as D) what

这是1990年1月四级统考题中的第43题，答案为C)。句意是"那不是如她承诺那样好的一餐。"

二、 引导非限制性定语从句，指代整个主句或主句的一部分。如：

这是1993年6月四级统考题中的第67题，答案为C)。as指代整个主句, 句意是"全世界的人都知道，马克·吐温是一位伟大的美国作家。"

A) as B) what C) so D) that

这是1998年6月四级统考题中的第58题，答案为A)。as指代主句的一部分。其句意是"英国人对与其不同的文化和做事方式不太熟悉，其他国家的人也通常这样。"

as引导非限制性定语从句时，有以下特点：

1) as引导的从句可置于句首、句中或句末，如句2中的as从句置于句首，句3中的as从句置于句末。又如：

4. ________might be expected, the response to the question was very mixed.

A) As B) That C) It D) What

这是1996年6月四级统考题中的第27题，答案为A)。as从句置于句首。全句意为"正如所预料的那样，对这个问题的反应各式各样。"

这是1999年6月四级统考题中的第53题，答案为C)，as从句置于句中，as后省去了is。全句意为"我希望，由当地政府提出来的制止空气污染的措施在此能得到认真考虑。"

6. A good many proposals were raised by the delegates, ________was to be expected.

A) that B) what

C) so D) as

这是2003年12月四级统考题中的第42题，答案为D)，as从句置于句末。全句意为"不出预料，代表们提出了很多建议。"

2) as在从句中通常作主语或宾语。现举as在从句中作宾语的例子如下：

7. This is also part of your job, as I told you before.

as在从句中作told的直接宾语。全句意为"正如我曾告诉过你的那样，这也是你工作的一部分。"

8. The size of the audience, as we expected, was well over one thousand. as在从句中作expected的宾语。全句意为"正如我们所期待的那样，观众人数大大超过一千人。"

3) 和as一样，which也能指代整个主句或主句的一部分，引导非限制性定语从句。如：

9. Some metals are better conductors of electricity than others, ________means that the former have atoms that contain more free electrons than the latter.

A) that B) this C) which D) it

这是1990年6月四级统考题中的第52题，答案为C)，which指代整个主句。全句意为"一些金属和其它的金属比起来，是电的更好的导体。这意味着这些金属的原子含自由电子的数量比其它的金属多。"



9. He can write a letter in English, which I cannot.

which指代主句的一部分。全句意为"他能用英文写信，而我不能。"

不过，as和which不能随意互换，原因如下：

a. 和as引导的非限制性定语从句不同，which引导的非限制性定语从句只能放在句末，如句9、句10。

10. Helen was much kinder to her youngest child than she was to the others, ________, of course, made the others jealous.

A) who B) that C) what D) which

这是1993年6月四级统考题中的第59题，答案为D)。全句意为"海伦对她的最小的孩子比对其他孩子要钟爱得多，这自然会使其他孩子产生嫉妒心。"

b. as和which的含义各不相同，as的含义为in accordance with "如，照，正如......一样"，而which的含义为and this "这"。请看下面的句子：

11. He was a foreigner, as I knew from his accent.

该句意为"正如我从他的口音听出来的那样，他确是外国人。"虽然句中的as可以用which替换，但句意却成了"他是外国人，这一点我是从他的口音听出来的"。

c. as在从句中作宾语比which在从句中作宾语的情况更常见，如下面的句子里用as引导从句的情况多于用which引导从句的情况：

12. John was admitted into the university, as/which we had hoped.

而且，一些带有关系代词as的分句表达较为固定。例如：

as everybody knows

as you may remember

as you say

as I can see

as I have said

as I'm told

as you may have heard

d. as在从句中作主语时，后面通常跟be或情态动词，一般不能像which那样可跟行为动词。例如可以说：

13. John was admitted into the university, which delighted us. 约翰被大学录取了，这令我们很高兴。

句中的which不可以用as代替。

三、注意as作关系代词引导非限制性定语从句与as作连接词引导方式状语从句的区别：

14. The survival of civilization as we know it is________threat.

A) within B) towards C) under D) upon

这是1995年6月四级统考题中的第53题。答案为C)。 句中as we know it是方式状语从句，因为as在从句中既不作主语，也不作宾语。全句意为"正如我们所知，文明的继续存在正在受到威胁。"

15. As________announced in today's papers, the Shanghai Export Commodities Fair is also open on Sunday.

A) being B) is C) to be D) been

这是1997年1月四级统考题中的第37题。答案为B)。As is announced in today's papers为非限制性定语从句，因为As指代整个主句，在从句中作主语。全句意为 "据今日的报纸报道，上海出口商品交易会也于周日开幕。"
