个人见解选C：一、当would rather than 做两者都可以接受，但更倾向与选择前者时解，如原句中做比较的同为receive后面的宾语，前者是money,后者是usual gift。这里套用would rather do A than B.

二、楼主提到的A选项是针对这样的情况才出现，就是would rather than 做只选前者不选后者解（宁愿……而不愿……）。
Would do A rather than do B，就是做比较的是动词，才有可能把rather 放后面。如He would watch TV at home rather than go to the cinema。

所以再回到原题，原文的意思应该是在钱和平常的礼物之间做选择的话，我们更愿意选择前者。而没有宁可不要后者，只要前者的意思。所以用would...rather than，不太合适,因为并非一定要做一个取舍。
