The Olympic torch run through San Francisco was free of chaotic scenes of people trying to snatch the flame from runners, though most people who came to see it did not.

It cost taxpayers a significant amount of money nonetheless.

The city spent about $726,400 to host the event, including overtime expenses and other costs, according to numbers provided by various city departments involved in the April 9 event.

The torch event came after weeks of planning for the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony and the run itself. By the day of the torch relay, the opening and closing ceremonies had been significantly shortened. When the city decided to dramatically alter the route, the closing ceremony was canceled.

It is not clear how much money, if any, was spent because of the route change.

It said the cost to the city would have been "exponential" had there been mass arrests. Those people would have had to be booked, housed in jail and prosecuted. Instead, only five people were arrested and all were cited and released.

The bill is less than what the city paid during the All-Star Game, which was approximately $1.24 million for several days of events. That spectacle, however, generated $3.1 million in tax revenue and donations to community causes, city officials said at the time.

Joe D'Alessandro, president and CEO of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the torch event undoubtedly added money to the city's economy.

"Obviously an event like that generated a lot of spending, being that it was the only stop in North America," said D'Alessandro, who said he did not have any specific information on the exact value of the event.

Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said the mayor could have saved the city the money and not disappointed the throngs that came to see the torch by canceling the event ahead of time.

"I call on the mayor to send the People's Republic of China a bill for the three-quarters of a million of taxpayer dollars expended for their PR stunt," Peskin said.
